Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

THE Australian opener Mark Taylor was left needing to add one more run to his undefeated 63 to reach 1,000 runs in Test cricket during 1993 when rain and bad light brought the third day of the first Test against South Africa to a premature close in Melbourne yesterday.

Only 58 overs have been bowled so far, with Australia 140 for 3 in their first innings. The first Test meeting between the two countries since 1970 seemed set for a certain draw.

The left-handed Taylor was delighted with his form during a four- hour innings spread over three days because of poor weather. 'I have been moving my feet better and striking the ball well in this innings,' Taylor said.

Craig Matthews grabbed the day's only wicket when David Boon was bowled off the inside edge for 25 in the final over before lunch.
