Cricket: Rutherford provides relief
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Match drawn
AN entertaining half-century by Ken Rutherford from 61 balls provided the only relief as the first Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand faded to a draw in Moratuwa yesterday.
Part of the afternoon session was lost to rain, but from the 54 overs bowled by Sri Lanka during the day, New Zealand managed only 91 runs, 53 of them from Rutherford.
Trailing by 39 on the first innings, New Zealand toiled to 195 for 5 before the game was brought to a halt with 13 overs remaining.
Blair Hartland and John Wright fell in the morning session after New Zealand resumed at 104 without loss. Champaka Ramanayake trapped Hartland lbw for 52 after he had occupied the crease for 256 minutes while Wright was even more painstaking, spending 300 minutes over his 42 before he was stumped off the bowling of the left-arm spinner, Don Anurasiri.
Sri Lanka's main success was to capture the wicket of Martin Crowe, the New Zealand captain, for 11. Clearly annoyed with himself, he slammed his bat on the ground on his way to the pavilion.
New Zealand play a day/night one-day international in Colombo tomorrow before the second and final Test on Sunday.
