Cricket / Round-Up: Morris shows the way as Glamorgan go top

WITH Glamorgan leading the Championship, and the search already under way for a left-handed batsman to combat Shane Warne, the name Hugh Morris may soon reach the England selectors' ears, writes Paul Trow.

Morris's third century of the season grew to 134 not out against Yorkshire at Middlesbrough yesterday before another England reject, the seamer Steve Watkin, sealed the 121-run win which lifted the Welsh county to the top of the table. Watkin took 4 for 59 as the last nine wickets fell for 66, making a mockery of some solid early batting by Martyn Moxon, Ashley Metcalfe and Richie Richardson.

Matthew Fleming, with a career- best 4 for 31, and Martin McCague, 3 for 15, claimed the bowling honours as Kent recorded their second win of the season over the bottom club Gloucestershire at Tunbridge Wells.

After resuming at 104 for 3, Gloucestershire collapsed to 162 all out to lose by an innings and 69 runs, their fourth defeat in five games.

Northamptonshire had Rob Bailey to thank as they beat Worcestershire by six wickets at Northampton with three balls to spare. The former England batsman, who returned a career- best 4 for 50 in the visitors' second innings, completed Northamptonshire's second win of the campaign with a six off Richard Illingworth.

Half-centuries by Bill Athey and David Smith, and a spell of 4 for 70 by the 44-year-old off-spinner Eddie Hemmings failed to break the deadlock at Edgbaston as Warwickshire, set 321 by Sussex, ended on 199 for 5.
