Your support makes all the difference.BRIAN LARA, the Warwickshire captain, was yesterday fined pounds 2,000 by his county's disciplinary committee for turning up late and missing Sunday's AXA League defeat by Somerset at Taunton.
The West Indian Test captain flew back home to Trinidad early last week on business but his return on Saturday was delayed, and after being diverted to Gatwick Airport he finally arrived at the ground 20 minutes before the start of the match.
However, with Warwickshire unaware that their captain's arrival was imminent, they were unable to name him in their side.
Lara was summoned to appear before a disciplinary hearing at Edgbaston yesterday, comprising the chief executive, Dennis Amiss, and the chairman, Mike Smith, and was ordered to pay a pounds 2,000 fine, a small proportion of the estimated pounds 60,000 he will earn this season for Warwickshire.
"We have had a full account from Brian about the problems he experienced and we accept there were some mitigating circumstances," said Amiss, who also revealed that Lara had apologised to the committee, team and members.
It is the second time this season that Lara has been delayed in the West Indies after missing his flight at the start of the summer which put his appearance at a news conference in doubt, but resolved when Phil Simmons gave up his seat to allow his Test captain to return in time.
