From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

SOUTH AFRICA were coasting towards a big victory here yesterday after Zimbabwe were reduced to a humiliating 102 all out, their lowest Test score.

South Africa won the first Test in this home-and-away series by an innings at Bloemfontein and they already seem set for a repeat performance. Zimbabwe's score was 25 runs fewer than their previous worst, 127 against Sri Lanka.

By the close South Africa, having lost an early wicket when Adam Bacher was caught behind, were 207 for 7, a lead of 105 with Jacques Kallis 101 not out, his fifth Test century. It took him to an average of over 40 in Tests and it included three sixes and 10 fours off 197 balls.

For South Africa, Shaun Pollock's four wickets for 32 were spiced with two slip catches. Hansie Cronje mopped up the lower order with three for 14.
