Cricket: India broken as West Indies open with win
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

With Phil Simmons (76), Stuart Williams (61) and Carl Hooper (61 not out) in commanding form, the tourists rattled up 273 for 5. Then their pace attack went to work, bundling out the top four Indian batsmen for 21 runs within the first 12 overs.
Sachin Tendulkar was caught behind without scoring in the first over chasing a Courtney Walsh away swinger and Manoj Prabhakar, trying to take his bat away from a pacy Walsh lifter, edged the ball on to his stumps.
The Indian captain, Mohammed Azharuddin, and Vinod Kambli then went in identical fashion, slashing at the newcomer Cameron Cuffy outside the off stump and India were sunk.
A stubborn Navjot Sidhu (52) and belligerent left- hander Atul Bedade (51) tried to inject some hope into a lost cause, but both fell within 15 balls of each other after a 96- run stand.
Not even the wily Kapil Dev - sporting a little pony- tail for the first time and batting with a runner after straining a hamstring while conceding 37 runs in five overs - could change the course of the match.
Simmons and Williams, who showed no signs of nerves on his one-day debut, gave the West Indies an excellent start, putting on 132 for the first wicket.
FARIDABAD: West Indies won toss.
