Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

NSW XI won by 28 runs

ENGLAND A took a leaf from the senior side's book, turning in an inept batting performance in a 28-run defeat in their opening tour match against a New South Wales XI at Bowral yesterday.

Only Paul Prichard, who made a handsome half-century after recovering from a stomach illness, and Mike Roseberry batted anywhere near the required standard.

The depressing tone of the day was set in David Capel's first over when Richard Chee Quee hit him for three fours and a six. Capel's 10 overs cost 59 runs.

Peter Such put the brake on, taking two for 11 in 10 overs of impeccable off-spin, but with Andy Caddick, David Millns and Mark Ilott still searching for rhythm, NSW were given 30 runs more than they deserved.

England's reply in scorching heat before 1,500 spectators was disappointing. Roseberry and Prichard's 66-run stand in 17 overs put victory in sight but the tail folded tamely.
