Andy Caddick strengthened his claims for an England recall for the Fifth Test at Trent Bridge next week by ripping out Australia's top order at Taunton.

The Somerset pace bowler took 3 for 5 in the space of 18 balls as the tourists replied to a home total of 284. By the close they had reached 182 for 4.

Caddick removed Michael Slater to a top-edged hook and shattered the stumps of Greg Blewett and Justin Langer off inside edges in an impressive 10-over opening spell of three for 30.

With any support Caddick would have had Australia in trouble, but, at the other end, Andre van Troost and Steffan Jones went for 98 off their combined 10 overs.

The Waughs added 63 before Mark edged Graham Rose to wicketkeeper Rob Turner and departed for 37. Steve, returning to his old county, was unbeaten on 51 off 60 balls at the close.
