From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

MARK ALLEYNE hit a defiant half-century to guide England A to a six-wicket victory as they opened the New Zealand leg of their winter tour here yesterday.

However, he was unhappy with the way his side bowled - giving away 51 runs in extras - and demanded an improvement. Alleyne said: "The wicket was fairly helpful and we should have had the other side out for no more than 120. We gifted them 30 wides. The ball was doing a bit but it was very untidy."

The hosts made 183 for 9 as England enjoyed a helpful pitch, a novelty after the low turners of Bangladesh. The tourists worked their way through the Academy until Tama Canning, batting at No 8, halted the flow of wickets, scoring a brisk 43.

Michael Gough and Marcus Trescothick were at ease at the start of England's innings before Gough (11) was out to Canning who then dismissed Trescothick (29) and Vikram Solanki (12). Alleyne joined Aftab Habib (46) and the pair shared a stand of 108 in 20 overs as England raced towards victory.
