Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

DO you have ambitions to work as a sports reporter or photographer? The Independent and the British Universities Sports Association, in conjunction with Kodak, are offering two students an unrivalled opportunity to gain first-hand experience covering a major overseas sporting event.

We are holding a competition to send a student reporter and photographer to cover the World Student Games in Japan from 23 August to 3 September next year. The Games feature many outstanding international sportsmen and women competing in 12 different sports, including athletics, swimming, football and gymnastics.

The winners will travel with the British team. All their travel and accommodation costs will be met and they will work in Japan under the direction of the team management and the Independent. Their work will be published, at our discretion, in the Independent.

Anyone over the age of 18 on 1 January 1995 and in full-time education is eligible to enter. You must also be available to travel to Japan in the period 20 August to 4 September 1995.

The competition will be in two parts. Initially, reporters should submit a typed report (maximum 400 words) of a student sports event taking place between October 1994 and March 1995. Photographers should submit up to three photographs, in either colour or monochrome, of a student sports event taken in the same period. The photographs should be taken on Kodak film and the negatives should be sent with the entry. Prints should be a minimum of 6in x 8in and a maximum of 12in x 15in, with details of the event, date and venue marked on the reverse.

Entries, which should be submitted with the entry form printed below, should reach the BUSA office no later than 31 March 1995. They will be returned only if accompanied by a stamped addressed envelope.

A limited number of entrants from each category will be shortlisted.

Successful candidates will then be invited to take part in a final competition to decide the two winners. This will be held at a BUSA event, where candidates will submit reports and photographs under working press conditions. The winners will have their work published in the Independent.

The judges will include representatives of the Independent, BUSA and Kodak.

The Independent, BUSA and Kodak reserve the right to publish any material received as part of the competition.

The competition is not open to relatives or employees of Newspaper Publishing, BUSA or Kodak.
