From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Mo Farah’s announcement that he will miss the Commonwealth Games has seen the double-Olympic champion join a growing list of high-profile names that will miss Glasgow 2014 through either injury, interest elsewhere or in one case, pregnancy.

Farah had been struggling with an abdominal injury that required him to be admitted to hospital in the United States, and while his recovery had been thought to be on course for him to compete in the 5,000m and 10,000m races in Glasgow, he was forced to pull out on Thursday morning – just hours after the Opening Ceremony opened the Games.

The 31-year-old will instead focus his attempts on defending his 5,000m European Championship gold in Zurich next month, while also challenge for the 10,000m crown. Having been part or the famed ‘Super Saturday’ when Team GB clinched three gold medals in the athletics at the London 2012 Olympics, Farah will now join Jessica Ennis-Hill on the sidelines.

Ennis-Hill gave birth to her first child – a son named Reggie – earlier this week, and had announced earlier this year that she would not participate as a result. Her compatriot and rival Katarina Johnson-Thompson was ruled out just this week after injuring her foot, meaning there is a wealth of British talent that will not be heading north of the border to compete for the next 11 days.

Here, we look at the high-profile names who will not be at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

While the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt will be competing, he failed to show up to the Opening Ceremony due to his training restrictions, and will only run in the 4x100m men’s relay for Jamaica after electing not to compete in the 100m or 200m that he holds the world record in.
