Alistair Brown smashed his way into the Sunday League record books by scoring 203 for Surrey against Hampshire at Guildford yesterday.
The 27-year-old opener helped himself to 11 sixes and 19 fours in reaching his double hundred from 118 balls. He was dismissed in the final over off the next ball he faced after gifting a catch to John Stephenson from a Simon Renshaw high full toss.
Brown beat Graham Gooch's previous individual mark of 176, made in 1983 against Glamorgan at Southend, but he failed by just three runs to equal the best limited-over performance in England - 206 by Alvin Kallicharran for Warwickshire against Oxfordshire in the NatWest Trophy in 1984.
Brown, who completed his 50 from just 20 deliveries and needed a further 36 to move into three figures, saw Surrey to a massive 344 for 5 from their 40 overs.
But at least Hampshire made a fight of it in reply, totalling 276 before their challenge was brought to an end in the 39th over. That was largely due to Shaun Udal who helped himself to 78 from 56 balls with the help of four fours and as many sixes.
Jason Gallian rediscovered his form to take Lancashire back to the top of the table with an unbeaten 80 in the eight-wicket win over Sussex at Old Trafford.
Gallian went top of the Sunday averages after 54no, 101no and 104 in consecutive innings before a broken left hand had forced him out for a month. But his first-wicket stand of 103 with Mike Atherton yesterday paved the way for a comfortable home victory, and they passed their target of 171 with 5.1 overs to spare.
Nottinghamshire upset the overnight leaders Warwickshire with an 87-run victory at Trent Bridge. Former Worcestershire all-rounder Chris Tolley struck 43 from 41 deliveries to help Nottinghamshire reach 229 for 8. Then New Zealander Nathan Astle and seamer Mark Bowen did most of the damage as Warwickshire slumped to a miserable 142 all out. Nottinghamshire's efforts were aided by half-centuries from Graeme Archer and the stand- in captain, Tim Robinson.
Craig White piled on the agony for Durham at Scarborough as Yorkshire followed their innings win in the Championship with a 138-run romp yesterday.
The former England all-rounder cracked 64 in 68 balls to help the Tykes reach 259 for 7 after being put in and then took a competition-best 4 for 18 to send Durham sliding to 121 all out.
England's Dean Headley looks to have proved his fitness for the fourth Test after an impressive spell for Kent against Leicestershire yesterday. The 27-year-old, ruled out of the Championship match by a side strain, took 3 for 44 at Canterbury as Leicestershire compiled 258 for 7 off their 40 overs.
He began with a four-over burst that cost 23 runs, but returned later to dismiss the Leicestershire captain, James Whitaker, for 60 and Jon Dakin in successive balls. For Kent, though, his efforts were in vain as they were defeated by 33 runs.
