Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL Dundee United have signed the Brazilian striker, Sergio, from the Portuguese Third Division club, Amora. The 25-year-old, who scored 18 goals last season, joined the Terrors in a £300,000 deal. He goes straight into the side for today'shome game against Motherwell.

The Celtic player, Paul Byrne, is set for a move to Watford, who have inquired about taking the 22-year-old Irishman to Vicarage Road for a week's trial. The Watford manager, Glenn Roeder, may have to pay around £250,000 if Byrne impresses.

Today, Celtic cross Glasgow to Firhill Park to face Partick Thistle, keen to rediscover their scoring touch and extend their 11-game unbeaten league run. Remarkably, Thistle's 3-1 win at Falkirk in midweek has left Celtic as the only club not to have scored three goals in any league game this season. To this end, Burns is expected to keep faith with his towering frontline of Pierre van Hooijdonk and Willie Falconer. Partick are without Roddy Grant, but have Rod McDonald available again.

The Rangers manager, Walter Smith, will welcome the return of Basile Boli and Brian Laudrup against Heart of Midlothian at Ibrox. However, Gordon Durie and David Robertson are suspended while Mark Hateley, Ally McCoist, Richard Gough and Andy Goram are out injured.
