Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Manny Pacquiao retained his WBO welterweight title by knocking Chris Algieri down six times en route to his lopsided points victory over the American, and was quick to call out Floyd Mayweather after the win.
"It's been a long time since I've been wanting this fight, it has to happen," said the eight-weight world champion.
"The fans deserve it. It's a good thing that we talk about that fight. It's time to say yes."
Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum claimed that there is now "no excuses" for the unbeaten Mayweather not to take the fight.
"No excuses. Manny knocked Algieri down six times in one fight. That's twice as many knockdowns as Mayweather has had in all his fights in the last 12 years," the 82-year-old said.
"All they have to do to is pick up the telephone. I'll be at the phone. Manny will be at his phone," Arum added.
Pacquiao has now won his last three fights, after battling back from back-to-back defeats. Against Algieri in Macau he looked more dominant than he has in years, beating the previously unbeaten 30-year-old to every punch.
The Filipino won by a unanimous decision after the judges scored it 119-103, 119-103 and 120-102.
