Joshua’s advisors have been in protracted negotiations with Ruiz’s team since his shock defeat in New York, where the previously undefeated British heavyweight relinquished his WBO, WBA & IBF belts after being knocked down four times and stopped in the seventh round.
The rematch is expected to take place in November or December with Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, keen to exercise a contract clause that allows the Brit to choose where the rematch will take place, with the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff being his preferred venue.
However, Lewis, who spent the majority of his career fighting out of the US, insists Joshua should attempt to win his belts back in the hometown of Mexico’s first world heavyweight champion.
“You know where I really want to see the fight? In Mexico baby,” Lewis told FightHype.
“Why not? In the first time in history we have a heavyweight champion from Mexico.
“I would have never thought that was possible but to see Andy Ruiz do it in such a fine fashion why not?
“Give the fans in Mexico a chance to see the fight that didn’t get a chance to come to New York to see it.”
Ruiz declared he would avoid rematching Joshua in the UK after it was revealed that Dillian Whyte had been cleared to fight Oscar Rivas, despite allegedly failing a drugs test prior to the bout.
