The Blackpool defender Gary Brabin was yesterday charged by the Football Association with bringing the game into disrepute following an alleged assault on Brentford's captain, Jamie Bates, in the Griffin Park tunnel after a match on 14 September.

Wales have called up the Cardiff City trio Lee Jarman, Scott Young and Patrick Mountain for Saturday's World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands in Cardiff. All three have been promoted from the Under-21 squad.

The injured Leeds winger Andy Gray has pulled out of the Scotland Under- 21 squad for the matches against Latvia on Saturday and Estonia next week.

The Everton defender Marc Hottiger has been dropped from the Swiss squad for Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Finland in Helsinki. Hottiger and the midfielder Christophe Ohrel pay the price for last month's 1-0 loss to Azerbaijan.

Celtic's proposed friendly with Bobby Robson's Barcelona at Parkhead this Saturday has been postponed. The club hope to reschedule it later this season.
