Barrie-Jon Mather, the Wigan centre, has joined the Australian club, Western Reds of Perth, in a three-year deal. Mather claims to be a free agent after disputing his current contract with Wigan, who have threatened an injunction against any club that signs him.

Bruce McGuire, Warrington's 33-year-old Australian forward, yesterday announced his retirement through injury.
