Wyeth cannot find the winning way

British champion Alison Wyeth had to settle for second place for the fifth successive year in the Reebok English National Cross Country Championships at Newark yesterday. Wyeth, 31, covered the six-kilometre course in 21min 59sec but was beaten in the finishing straight by Oxford University's Nnenna Lynch. And Lynch, an American post-graduate student, will face Wyeth again at the World Cross Country Championships in South Africa on 23 March. Preston's John Nuttall won the men's 14 kilometre race. The pre-race favourite, Yorkshireman Andrew Pearson, dropped out just after 11 kilometres, feeling unwell when contesting the lead.
