Athletics: Other side of the track: The old guard playing gurus to a new generation
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.LINFORD CHRISTIE (Aged 39)
The 1992 Olympic and 1993 world 100m champion has gained an impressive cv in his short time as a coach. Last August Christie guided Darren Campbell to the European 100m title he formerly held and in March Jamie Baulch won the world indoor 400m title. His charges also include Katharine Merry, a member of Britain's bronze medal winning 4 x 400m relay team at the European Championships last summer.
PETER ELLIOTT (36)
The Commonwealth 1,500m champion in 1990 and a medallist at the world championships and the Olympics, Elliott is one half of the coaching team behind John Mayock. He prefers to call himself an adviser, although Mayock, who last year won the European indoor 3,000m title and took the 1,500m silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, lists both Elliott and Pete Watson as his coaches. Elliott is also a national event coach for 800m and 1,500m.
MIKE McFARLANE (39)
Fifth in the 1984 Olympic 100m final and joint Commonwealth 200m champion in 1982, with Allan Wells, McFarlane had the satisfaction of guiding Dwain Chambers under the 10 seconds barrier for 100m in Nuremberg last month. He also coaches Julian Golding, the Commonwealth 200m champion, Joice Maduaka, who was placed third in the European Cup 100m race last month, and Tony Jarrett, who holds the Commonwealth 110m hurdles title.
EAMONN MARTIN (40)
Martin, the Commonwealth 10,000m champion in 1990 and winner of the London Marathon in 1993, still competes as a veteran but coaches a group of talented young distance runners at Basildon Athletics Club.
ASTON MOORE (43)
Moore is the guru behind Ashia Hansen, the triple jumper who holds the world indoor title and world indoor record. In his own triple jumping days he won the European junior title in 1975 and was Commonwealth bronze medallist in 1978 and 1982.
MARK ROWLAND (36)
The British 3,000m steeplechase record holder is gaining a growing reputation. His athletes include Hayley Tullett, who finished fourth in the European Cup 1,500m race last month, and British Under-23 steeplechaser Andy Robinson.
