Boxing Felix Trinidad of Puerto Rico knocked out Freddie Pendleton, of the United States, after 1min 30sec of the fifth round to retain his International Boxing Federation welterweight title in Las Vegas on Saturday night. In an earlier bout, Wilfredo Vasquez, of Puerto Rico, stopped Elroy Rojas, of Venezuela, after 1min 21sec of the 11th round to win the World Boxing Association featherweight title.

Cycling

Belgium's Koen de Koker has failed in his attempt to beat Tony Rominger's world hour record at Manchester's indoor velodrome. De Koker, 26, took to the track after the Five Nations Grand Prix but managed only 47.076 kilometres, more than 5km short of Rominger's record set in Bordeaux 18 months ago.

Fencing

Quentin Berriman, the national champion from Cardiff, added another trophy to his collection on Saturday as he beat Keith Lovejoy in the British Open Epee Championship (Miller-Hallett) final 15-11 at the Landowne Club in London.

Berriman showed his style first eliminating Chris Houser 15-11 in the quarter final and the veteran Howard West 15-12 in the semi final. The result leaves Berriman the dominant force in British epee.

Football

West Bromwich Albion have signed Gareth Hamner, a wing-back with the League of Wales club, Newtown, for an initial fee of pounds 20,000.

Golf

Dave Stockton matched Bob Murphy's one-day-old course record of 10-under- par 62 to join Jay Sigel at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds of the seniors' Cadillac NFL Classic at Clifton, New Jersey on Saturday.
