The Royal wedding frenzy is continuing to prevail as the nation prepares to watch Meghan Markle and Prince Harry exchange their vows later this month.
The Royal Mint has unveiled a new design for an official coin released today to mark the special occasion.
The £5 coin is adorned with an image of the couple gazing into each other’s eyes, clearly based on the photographs taken at Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden during the photocall that took place on November 27 to announce their engagement.
However, the couple also sat for photographs with The Royal Mint following the news of their engagement so that their likenesses could be captured accurately.
The coin, which is available in gold, silver and brilliant uncirculated varieties, was designed by Jody Clark, a member of The Royal Mint’s Coin Design team.
He previously created the most recent depiction of the Queen on a coin in 2015.
Anne Jessopp, CEO of The Royal Mint, spoke about her experience of working closely with the engaged couple to create the celebratory coin.
“It has been an honour for The Royal Mint to work closely with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to create the authentic royal wedding coin celebrating this most British of celebrations,” she said.
“I have been in post as CEO of The Royal Mint for just a couple of months, and already The Royal Mint has celebrated the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge, and now a royal wedding, so it’s a very exciting year for The Royal Mint in terms of royal moments.”
The gold proof coin created for the upcoming royal wedding is priced at £1,980, the silver proof at £82.50 and the brilliant uncirculated coin costs £13.
On March 1, The Royal Mint presented a new collection of 10p coins that it described as “quintessentially British”.
The collection included 26 new varieties of the coin, with designs featuring the likes of James Bond, the Loch Ness Monster and a traditional full English breakfast.
