An animal welfare group has reported a huge rise in the number of miniature dogs being abandoned at its centres.

Experts believe the false assumption that toy breeds would be less demanding than larger dogs, needing less exercise and attention, has led to owners discarding their pets.

The Blue Cross charity has seen the number of so-called "handbag dogs" being given up rise from 53 in 2006 to 177 in the past 12 months.
