IMAGINE living on an island with as many goats as people. If you can, then Harper Goat Farm on Clear Island, County Cork, nine miles south of the Irish mainland and just north of the Fastnet Rock, could fit the bill. The pounds 70,000 farm is a perfect base for a Tom and Barbara-style Good Life: it is completely organic and produces a successful cheese. As well as the four-bedroom farmhouse, the sale includes a milking parlour, dairy, goat house and greenhouse plus 17 acres of land. However, if you want some of the farm's pedigree goats, you must buy them separately.

Cape Clear has a junior school, bars and shops to cater for its resident population of 150, as well as a campsite and various hostelries for the Irish culture groupies, bird-watchers and sailors who visit in the summer. The farm lies a quarter of a mile from the main island pier, an hour's boat ride from the mainland.
