Alaïa to stage Memphis design exhibition (new pictures)

After gallerist (and sister of Italian Vogue's editor-in-chief) Carla Sozzani dedicated an exhibition to the Memphis design collective in Milan earlier this year, Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa's pays tribute to the same group at his Paris gallery this fall.

Memphis Blues will put on show some of the movement's most iconic designs, such as the Brazil side table by Peter Shire or the Lido chair by Michele De Lucchi (pictured).

The Milan-based Memphis design group, consisting of creatives such as Ettore Sottsass, Barbara Radice, Marco Zanini, Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, and Martine Bedin, was highly influential in the early 1980s with its groundbreaking, colorful furniture design.

According to Sozzani, Memphis was the last real design movement of the 20th century.

Coinciding with the new exhibition, publishing house Electa will come out with new editions of the two books Memphis, research, experiences, results, failures and successes of new design and Memphis, the new international style.

Memphis Blues will run at the Galerie Azzedine Alaïa in Paris, November 5 - December 4. Entry is free.
