GENEVA - Some 44 million people, one in 130 of the world's population, are refugees or displaced persons forced to flee their homes by conflict or oppression, the United Nations said yesterday, Reuter reports.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said the world faced a mounting refugee crisis amid a spiral of civil wars that followed the collapse of Communism. Frightened governments were closing frontiers.
