Johannesburg - Winnie Mandela made a belated attempt to save face yesterday by resigning as South African deputy minister of arts and culture hours before her official dismissal was due to come into effect.
Sacked on 27 March, she was reinstated last Wednesday after she went to court claiming her first dismissal was unconstitutional. She launched a biting attack on President Nelson Mandela, her estranged husband, describing his handling of the affair as "clumsy, unprofessional and inept." Mrs Mandela, speaking at a press conference at her home in Soweto, made it clear that her departure did not mean the end of her involvement in politics. She is still head of the ANC's Women's League.
