Washington - The United States signalled yesterday it could support the Spanish Foreign Minister, Javier Solana, as Nato's next secretary-general and officials said the appointment is expected to be formally made next week. A senior official said: "A consensus has formed around Solana and he looks to be named next week" when Nato foreign ministers meet in Brussels. "I believe France is on board, I believe everybody's on board," he added.
Senior US officials, sensitive about an earlier dispute with Europe over the next alliance chief, refused to discuss the matter publicly. Reuter
