A US navy court in Japan sentenced Airman Apprentice Terry Helvey to life imprisonment yesterday for the murder of a homosexual shipmate, Reuter reports from Yokosuka. The eight-officer jury announced its decision, the maximum permitted sentence, after a four-day trial at the headquarters of the US Seventh Fleet in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo. Helvey, 21, pleaded guilty to the unpremeditated murder of Seaman Allen Schindler, 22, last October in a public lavatory near the US naval base at Sasebo, south-west Japan.
