The UN Security Council voted to impose a total international embargo against Haiti if its military leaders did not leave power and restore democracy, AFP reports from New York.
The embargo gives the military 15 days to step aside before the sanctions take effect. The UN resolution approved unanimously by the 15-member Security Council targets the military rulers, and orders an immediate freeze on their financial assets abroad and a ban on issuing them visas.
Haitians reacted angrily, calling the sanctions a waste of time that would do nothing to remove the military leaders.
