BEIRUT (AFP) - Lebanon's government and opposition are holding indirect talks over a possible delay to the general election that is set to open on Sunday, political and diplomatic sources said yesterday.

The French ambassador, Daniel Husson, has launched a mediation bid between the pro-Syrian government and the Maronite Christian patriarch, Nasrallah Sfeir, who supports the opposition's call for a postponement.

The Prime Minister, Rashid Solh, had previously ruled out a delay, while the Maronites refused to take part in the polls.

Mr Husson said, after meeting Mr Solh and the patriarch yesterday, that the two sides wanted to 'find a rapid solution' and appeared to be 'aware of the urgency' of the situation.
