MOSCOW (Reuter) - One thousand soldiers from Russia and three other former Soviet republics have arrived to reinforce Russian troops protecting the increasingly vulnerable border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, Itar-Tass news agency said yesterday. It said Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan had sent the troops in response to a request from the new Tajik leadership.
President Rakhmon Nabiyev resigned on Monday under pressure from opposition activists who seized his presidential residence last week. The chairman of parliament took over as interim nominal leader.
