ROME - Desperate to shed a scandal-scarred past before elections in March, the Christian Democrats yesterday relaunched themselves as the Popular Party. Mino Martinazzoli, the party leader, said the new grouping must try to keep its identity, and he declined an offer from the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS) to join a progressive alliance. Reuter
