LUANDA (AP) - President Jose Eduardo dos Santos of the MPLA party appeared to be heading for victory yesterday over his former civil war foes, even though less than a quarter of the votes had been counted in the country's first multi-party elections.
But Angolans held off celebrating, as Unita insisted their vote would pick up and many citizens feared the losers might reject the vote and return to violence. Mr Dos Santos had 62.29 per cent and the veteran guerrilla leader Jonas Savimbi had 29.49 per cent.
