Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Images have been released of some of the world's most breathtaking views when coming into land by plane.

From idyllic island settings to lively urban backdrops, the scenic locations include natural beauty spots from the Caribbean to East Asia.

One features the lush green landscapes surrounding the landing strip on the Dutch Caribbean island of Saba.

Another captures the sliver of a runway for the Juancho E Yrausquin Airport, which edges out on a small peninsula from the island with nothing but ocean and rocks at either end.

An island of an altogether different nature greets passengers flying into Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport in Canada. Also known as Toronto Island Airport, the longest of its three runways is 1,216 meters long. Despite its small size, the airport is the ninth busiest in Canada.

Closer to the UK, the Barra Airport services the Outer Hebridean island of Barra. It is the only airport in the world where flights use a beach as a runway. For this reason, flight schedules vary with the tides, and the rare night time take-offs are illuminated by the lights of vehicles.

A windsock is used to advise other beach-goers if the airport is active or not.

Malta International was named the world's most scenic airports in the poll, conducted by PrivateFly.
