Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

United States federal agents arrested yesterday what it claimed was "a support group" for Hizbollah, the Lebanon-based Islamist group.

United States federal agents arrested yesterday what it claimed was "a support group" for Hizbollah, the Lebanon-based Islamist group.

Homes and businesses around Charlotte, North Carolina, were raided early yesterday morning and 16 or 17 people were arrested. An affidavit alleged the group was involved in money laundering, conspiracy to traffick in contraband cigarettes, immigration law violations and attempted bribery.

US federal agents said the investigation had been assisted by Canadian intelligence agencies, and that confidential sources had been infiltrated into the groups.

The "group" invested Hizbollah funds in a tobacco shop and a Lebanese restaurant, the US said. It was not clear if this involved anything illegal.

It was also alleged to have smuggled cigarettes to Michigan, where the tax is higher, and sent the proceeds to Hizbollah. It was further accused of money laundering and immigration fraud.

Several previous American arrests of suspected terrorists have collapsed due toinsufficient evidence.
