Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

At least 46 people were killed in Baghdad today as three bombs exploded while a US convoy was passing. More than 200 other people were wounded.

Many of the victims were children. The attack happened during a ceremony marking the opening of a new sewage system in the neighborhood.

Interior Ministry spokesman Col. Adnan Abdul-Rahman said two car bombs and a roadside bomb exploded in swift succession as the convoy was driving through the al-Amel neighborhood.

A US helicopter evacuated some of the wounded while others circled overhead, an Associated Press photographer reported from the scene. US forces sealed off the area.

* An explosion targeting police in the northern Iraq city of Talafar killed at least four people and wounded 16, Iraqi and US officials said.

* West of Baghdad, a suicide attacker exploded a car bomb in front of a government complex at Abu Gharaib, killing at least one US soldier and two Iraqi policemen and wounding more than 60 people, Iraqi and coalition officials said. The attack targeted a compound in the area housing the mayor's office and a police station.
