A judge sentenced the former head of Chile's military secret police and his deputy to jail for ordering the murder in 1976 of the exiled Socialist leader Orlando Letelier in Washington, Reuter reports from Santiago.

The Supreme Court judge, Adolfo Banados, sentenced retired general Manuel Contreras to seven years and his deputy, Brigadier Pedro Espinoza, to six years. The two, who maintained their innocence, can appeal against the sentence, which the judge said was reduced due to the length of time since the crime was committed.
