CAIRO (AP) - An Islamic militant who plotted the stabbing attack on Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz was killed in a shoot-out at a cafe in a Cairo suburb on Saturday night, the government said. Basem Mohammed Khalil Shaheen had been given a three-year prison sentence in absentia over the 1990 killing of Farag Foda, whose critical writings often targeted fundamentalists. Police arrested seven others in raids across Cairo.
Mahfouz, 83, who was stabbed in the neck on Friday, was in good condition.
