The former head of overseas aid at the Italian Foreign Ministry, Giuseppe Santoro, was arrested yesterday as part of the campaign against corruption, police said, AFP reports from Rome. Mister Santoro was served with an arrest warrant as part of investigations by the Rome prosecutor into bribes paid by companies to win contracts in developing countries. He was told last month that he was implicated in the investigation. At the time he had just been appointed Italian permanent representative to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation.
