THIS newspaper and its sister, the Independent, have eagles on their mastheads - great birds soaring freely, we hope, through cloudless skies. Algiers launched its own Independent on Wednesday, a day late, with a sheep - fast asleep no less and dreaming of other sheep, according to the bubble above its head - as its symbol of freedom and excellence. Perhaps it was a subtle hint that the newspaper's proprietors were biding their time, or, dare we say, pulling the wool over readers' eyes.
