Germany voiced renewed outrage on Monday over the disclosure that US intelligence tapped Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone.

Volker Kauder, the parliamentary leader of Ms Merkel’s Christian Democrats, demanded that America cease its “world power posturing” towards its allies as German intelligence officials headed to Washington to obtain an explanation for reports that the US National Security Agency had bugged the Chancellor’s mobile for over a decade.

He told Die Welt newspaper that if the reports proved true, it would be an “outrage which must have consequences”.
