Turkey coup: Facebook Live map shows how people in Ankara and Istanbul are broadcasting the turmoil

The people of Turkey have amassed in the streets of Ankara after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged them to rise against the military’s attempted coup – and many of them are using Facebook Live to broadcast scenes amid the turmoil.

Using an interactive map in the Facebook browser, blue dots speckle the globe, concentrating heavily in Turkey. In the Ankara, users are broadcasting images of protest in the streets as jets stream across the sky, while many others in the region have their phones fixed to television news.

Early reports said that both Facebook and Twitter had been blocked in the country, but the the block appears to have been lifted based on the number of people streaming from the social media application.

Facebook first launched the app in May of this year. Users can stream live video from around the globe by simply rolling their cursor over the blue dots.
