Syrian and Lebanese troops yesterday bulldozed vast fields of opium poppies and hashish in the Bekaa Valley in their biggest crackdown on the drug trade, AP reports from Deir al-Ahmar in Lebanon. Soldiers destroyed the fields and then combed the area on foot. An ultimatum for farmers to destroy their marijuana and opium plantations expired on Tuesday.
