If the Kono Pizza catches on, Italy's most well-travelled contribution to the world of fast food will finally be able to hold its own against Big Macs and doner kebabs.

It is the invention of Rossano Boscolo, an Italian hotelier whose father had him rolling out pizza dough when he was a boy.

Marco Piva, a Milanese architect, has designed a cone-theme kiosk where the pizzas will be cooked and sold on the Italian high street. The first dozen shops are to open across Italy in the coming months.

The concept is to offer real Italian pizza - no pineapple and curried chicken abominations, please - in a handy new form.

The basic Margherita, with tomato sauce, cheese and a sprig of basil, will be the mainstay, and other varieties, such as four seasons and capricciosa, will be available as well.

The expected price for each Kono Pizza is about €2.80 (£1.90).
