Paris police officers jailed for raping tourist

Two men each sentenced to seven years in prison

Two French police officers have been convicted of gang raping a Canadian tourist in Paris’ police headquarters, in a case that has caused uproar in the country.

Emily Spanton said she met a group of officers in an Irish pub in 2014, while visiting the French capital.

The men offered to give her a night-time tour of 36 Quai des Orfevres, a famous address that has appeared in numerous French films and novels.

Ms Spanton said she was raped several times in the building and was also forced to drink whisky and perform sex acts.

During her testimony she said three officers were involved. Only two were brought to court.

Both men are members of the elite BRI force that specialises in serious crimes, such as armed robbery.

They denied wrongdoing and alleged Ms Spanton had consented to sexual acts.

The officers have been sentenced to seven years in prison each.

Judges initially threw out the case but the Paris prosecutor and Ms Spanton won their appeal to have it brought before a jury.

Ms Spanton waived her right to anonymity in interviews before the trial.
