Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.President Barack Obama was fast to offer America’s support to the French authorities after what he described as an “outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians”.
Speaking at the White House, Mr Obama his administration had offered its full support to France, though he had not yet spoken personally with President Francois Hollande.
“We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of France need,” he said, and pledged to “bring these terrorists to justice and go after any terrorist networks”.
He added: “Those who think that they can terrorise the people of France or the values that they stand for are wrong.”
He was briefed on the attacks Friday by his counter-terrorism adviser Lisa Monaco.
“This is an attack not just on Paris. It’s an attack not just on the people of France,” he said. “But this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values we share.”
