Four people were missing in the wake of the storms which came just days after floods surged through south-eastern France, killing 39 people and leaving 30 missing.
In the worst-hit town, Rennes-les- Bains, the Sal river rose 22 feet in less than two hours, cutting roads to the town and bringing down power lines.
In Genoa, northern Italy, at least three people were killed when a violent rainstorm flooded the streets.
