Netherlands to approve euthanasia

THE HAGUE (Reuter) - After 20 years of heated debate, the large parties in the Dutch parliament backed plans to let doctors perform euthanasia under tightly controlled conditions.

Euthanasia will technically remain a criminal offence but in practice doctors will only be penalised if they have not complied with the guidelines. The main conditions are that the patient should be terminally ill and suffering unbearable pain.
