On Wednesday, on the eve of Germany's unification anniversary, assailants tried to set the Düsseldorf synagogue on fire, prompting Paul Spiegel, the head of Germany's 81,000-strong Jewish community, to say some were considering leaving the country.
Andreas Nachama, head of Berlin's Jewish community, said yesterday: "These broken mirrors are a mirror image of German society. This situation is alarming." He likened today's climate to the early Seventies, when Germany was swept by left-wing terror.
