A Belgian production crew filmed the moment Hungarian right-wing MEP Jozsef Szajer was caught fleeing a sex party last December.

Mr Szajer resigned from the far-right ruling Fidesz party in December 2020 after he was arrested by police for breaking coronavirus restrictions by attending a sex party with some 25 people above a cafe in Belgium.

He also resigned as a member of the European Parliament. 

Production house Bargoens were on road with a local police intervention when they heard reports of a party in the centre of Brussels, Het Laatste Nieuws reported. 

When they arrived, police were arresting Mr Szajer, who had been seen climbing out of the window and down a drainpipe in an attempt to escape, the newspaper said.

The video shows 59-year-old Mr Szajer surrounded by police officers with his hands against a wall.

Police found an ecstasy pill on Mr Szajer, but he denies taking any substances and says he offered to take a drugs test, but the police did not oblige. 

David Manzheley, a 29-year-old doctoral student who hosted the party, told Het Laatste Nieuws that the party - which was made up mostly of men - did involve sex.

“We talk, we have a drink - just like at the cafe. The only difference is that in the meantime, we’re having sex with each other,” Mr Manzheley said. 

Mr Manzheley was also filmed by the crew standing in the doorway of his flat, waving at the camera and raising his thumb.

He added: “I don’t see what’s wrong with that. We’re all adults, everything is by mutual consent.”

Mr Szajer, who is politically very conservative and anti-LGBTQ+, subsequently apologised for breaking coronavirus restrictions and resigned. 

President Orban told the Magyar Nemzet newspaper that Szajer’s actions were indefensible and went against the values of Fidesz’ political group, which portrays itself as a champion of traditional Christian values and families.  

“We will not forget nor repudiate his 30  years of work, but his deed is unacceptable and indefensible. Following this, he took the only appropriate decision when he apologised and resigned from his position as a member of the European Parliament and left Fidesz,” Orban said.

In an apology statement, Mr Szajer wrote: “I deeply regret violating the Covid restrictions – it was irresponsible on my part. I am ready to pay the fine that occurs. With my resignation on Sunday I drew the political and personal consequences.

“I apologise to my family, to my colleagues, to my voters. I ask them to evaluate my misstep against a background of 30 years of devoted and hard work. The misstep is strictly personal. I am the one who owns responsibility for it.”
